The word "shrine" is used to describe any of the shrines, pools, fountains, or
cauldrons found throughout the dungeons. Like anything that can be used in the
dungeons, a shrine will have a yellow outline around it when the mouse cursor is over
the shrine. Shrines are found on levels 1-8, cauldrons on levels 13-16, fountains
and pools on levels 1-8 and 13-16, and goat shrines on levels 9-12.

Shrines can only be used by one player, and like chests after they are opened, they can
not be used afterwards, and mousing over the shrine will no longer show information in
the message area or outline the shrine. There are some shrine-like dungeon features,
though, that remain active use after use: the Purifying Spring and the Pool of Blood.
Level layouts change from game to game, and so it might seem that the wide range of
shrine names might connect to random effects, changing their meaning from game to
game, or maybe having no connection to the effect that the shrine bestows. Fortunately,
once you find that one Eldrich shrine will change all your healing and mana potions
into Rejuvenation potions, you will know that every other Eldritch shrine you encounter
will do the same thing. Hence, if you encounter a Glimmering Shrine, you might want
to wait until you accumulate a large number of magic items before using it.

Like the layout of the dungeon levels encountered in a game, though, the shrines will
appear in different locations, and the types of shrines encountered on one level will
change from game to game. The specific effect of a shrine might vary, however. Each
Enchanted Shrine, for example, will decrease the spell level of a different random spell
each time it is encountered and used.

Shrine rooms on levels 1-8 are usually crowded with creatures of one particular type.

Goat Shrines
Goat shrines found on levels 5-8, for example, are typically found in a closed-off room
with one (initially closed) door and sometimes as many as a dozen goat-boys. On the
lower levels, Zombies, Skeletons, or Fallen Ones might be crowded into the room. The
great concentration of creatures does lend itself to area-effect spells, though, and can
prove to be an easy way to gain many experience points, since the single door will provide
a convenient bottleneck through which to pound on the inhabitants.

Pools are strange enchanted wells that are in the dungeons for unknown purposes. They
function similarly to shrines, being activated only once, and giving you a certain blessing
or curse. Pools are more common than the blood fountain, but less common than shrines.

The Blood Fountain
The Blood Fountain is a rare dungeon feature which stands apart from the shrines and the
pools. It is a gory piece of stonework, a crimson pool of blood which is constantly refilled
from the mouth of a winged gargoyle. Besides being very rare, this artifact is unique in that
it can be used multiple times. With each use, it fills up your hit points. The Blood Fountain
can be used as many times as you want.


Abandoned "The hands of men may be guided by fate." Add +2 to Dexterity
Creepy "Strength is bolstered by heavenly faith." Add +2 to Strength
Cryptic "Arcane power brings destruction." Fills mana ball and casts nova spell from player
Divine "Drink and be refreshed." Kicks out either 2 full rejuvenation potions, or 1 full mana and 1 full healing, and fills mana and life balls
Eerie "Knowledge and wisdom at the cost of self." Adds 2 points to your magic
but also permanently reduces your mana total
Eldritch "Crimson and azure become as the sun." Health and mana potions become rejuvenation
Enchanted "Magic is not always what it seems to be." One spell down one level; all others up one level
Fascinating "Intensity comes at the cost of wisdom." Increases Firebolt +2, but you lose 10% of your max mana
Glimmering "Mysteries are revealed in the light of reason." All items are identified
Gloomy "Those who defend seldom attack." Add +2 AC to all shields, helmets, and armor; -1 to all weapon's max damage
Hidden "New strength is forged through destruction." Adds 10 points to the max and current durability to all items; -10 to one
Holy "Wherever you go, there you are." Teleports you to a random location
Imposing "A surge of blood interrupts your thoughts." Add +2 to Dexterity
Magical "While the spirit is vigilant the body thrives." Casts mana shield on the player
Mysterious "Some are weakened as one grows strong." Adds 5 points to one random attribute; takes 1 point from all others
Mystic "Your skills increase, but at a price." All gold piles but one are converted into hitpoints.
Ornate "Salvation comes at the cost of wisdom." Holy bolt level +2; lose 10% max mana
Quiet "The essence of life flows from within." Add +2 to Vitality
Religious "Time cannot diminish the power of steel." Repairs all weapons
Sacred "Energy comes at the cost of wisdom." Charged bolt +2 levels; lose 10% max mana
Secluded "The way is cleared when viewed from above." Completes automap for current level
Spiritual "Riches abound when least expected." Fills all empty inventory slots with small amounts of gold
Spooky You: "Where avarice fails; patience gains reward."
Others: "Blessed by a benevolent companion."
Full rejuvenation potions for other players
Stone "The powers of Mana refocused renews." Recharges all staves
Supernatural you hear a strange cry from the distance The level above the current level is restocked with creatures and items.
Tainted You: "Those who are last may yet be first." Others: "Generosity brings its own rewards." +1 to a random stat of the player touching the shrine; -1 to all stats of the other players in the game.
Thaumaturgic "What once was opened now is closed." All chests on the current level regenerate with new items
Weird "The sword of justice is swift and sharp." Adds +1 to all weapons max damage
Blood Fountain --- +1 to health--can be used repeatedly
Fountain of Tears --- +1 to one attribute; -1 to another.
Goat Shrine/Cauldron --- Random Effect
Murky Pool --- gain Infravision (temporary)
Purifying Spring --- +1 to mana--can be used repeatedly.


Glowing "Knowledge is power" +5 to Magic, -5% Experience
Mendicant "Give and you shall receive" Takes half your gold and converts it to experience
Murphy's "That which can break will" 1 in 3 chance of damage to an item, or takes away 1/3 of your gold
Oily "That which does not kill you..." casts a ring of fire around the shrine,
and adds +2 to primary stats
Monk: +1 str, +1 dex
Warrior: +2 str
Rogue and Bard: +1 dex, +1 magic
Sorcerer: +2 magic Barbarian: +2 vit
Shimmering "Spiritual energy is restored" Restores mana to full
(noon - 6pm)
"You feel stronger" +2 to Strength
(6pm - 8pm)
